HU Homecoming

Homecoming is a time where alumni come back to where it all started and reminisce on their past days at Howard University. Here’s a nostalgic list of homecoming gems that you may not have known about:

1. One of Kanye West’s First Live Performance Happened At Yardfest
In 2003, Kanye West graced the Yardfest stage to perform his first single “Through The Wire”. At the time of his performance, he wasn’t much of a commodity. Kanye primarily worked behind the scenes as a songwriter and producer for many big names in the music industry. His Yardfest performance was the first time that many saw him perform live and for free. The crowd didn’t receive him very well. Four months later, he released his debut album titled “The College Dropout.”

2. SZA Once Performed At The Homecoming Fashion Show

Before SZA gained “CTRL”, she performed at performed at the Howard Homecoming fashion show in 2014. At this time, SZA was an up and coming artist who had just released her “Z” titled EP. Three years later, she’s now celebrating the success of her first debut album and receiving recognition from huge artists such as Beyoncé.

3. Wale Shot A Music Video During Homecoming

In 2008, Wale recorded his “Nike Boots” music video while performing at Yardfest. The D.C. native was joined by other artists such as “Young Guru” and “9th Wonder” as film director Chris Robinson directed the video. Since then, Wale has performed at every Yardfest that has taken place.

4. Notorious B.I.G. Graced The Stage At Yardfest

When Biggie hit the yard in 1995, it was safe to say that it was a “BIG” deal. Biggie sat outside of Blackburn, took pictures, and signed autographs all before hitting the stage. Biggie was brought to the stage and introduced by Howard Alumni Sean “Diddy” Combs. Two years later, the rap industry lost the profound lyricist to fatal gunshot wounds.

5. Mack Wilds Hosted The Greek Step Show

Tristan “Mack” Wilds once took the liberty of hosting the iconic step show in 2014. Most people knew him from his various acting roles in the hit show “90210” and “The Secret Life of Bees” film. He hosted the show around the time he announced his pursuits of launching a rap career and began to go by his stage name. That year, the Alpha chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. earned first place.

6. LL Cool J and New Edition Made Guest Appearances At The Homecoming Football Game

In 2004, rapper LL Cool J made his way to Greene Stadium to commence the football game. He performed a ceremonial coin toss at the homecoming game against Norfolk State University. The R&B group New Edition also serenaded the crowd with a soulful rendition of the National Anthem.

7. Howard University’s Homecoming Began 93 Years Ago
