Gucci is back! The Hip Hop Awards kicked off with a performance by Gucci Mane, Travis Scott, Young Thug and Quavo. DJ Khaled, who won the “Hustler of the Year” award, was the host of the night. It wouldn’t be the Hip Hop awards without the traditional cyphers. Rappers like Beanie Sigel, Young M.A. and Empire’s Yazz and Bre-Z just to name a few stepped up to the cypher challenge. Even Chocolate Droppa (Kevin Hart) spit bars with Lil Wayne by his side.

With all the recent racial injustices, the BET Hip Hop Awards proudly had several “woke” moments. When Big K.R.I.T. hit the stage in a police uniform spitting spoken “woke” words, fist rose in unity across the audience. T.I. dressed in Black Panther attire also performed with lyrics dedicated to police brutalities against African Americans. Sway had all the answers this night as he referenced Tupac when speaking on the injustices. There was entire cypher committed to issues within the black community and “wokeness” Stic, Dead Prez rapped, “I’m wise now, got a new pair of eyes now.”

Kendrick Lamar, who won the “Lyricist of the Year” award, and presented Snoop Dogg with the “I Am Hip Hop Award.”  Other artist paid respect to Uncle Snoop for all the work he has done within the hip-hop industry. During his acceptance speech, Snoop Dogg stated, “I also want to say to all the young rappers that’s in the game right now, a lot of people don’t understand y’all and y’all are misunderstood. They didn’t understand me in the beginning either so you gotta keep pushing, stay who you are, be original, be diverse.”
